Chapter Six

“You’re taking a big risk, Horatio,” Hayden eventually said.

The Alpha sat opposite Horatio in the Books with Claws employee break room. To Hayden’s left sat Nathan Fisher, the pack’s new Gamma. After the last Gamma betrayed Hayden and the pack, it shook up the pack structure, and here was Horatio doing the same. Having grown up with Hayden, Horatio knew the Alpha would do what he could. After all, Horatio had once risked his own life to help Conner, Hayden’s tabby shifter mate. However, Horatio also knew Hayden had responsibilities as an Alpha. Hayden should treat Horatio the same way he treated every other wolf under him.

“I don’t know you that well, Beta, but we’ve worked with each other for years. This is irresponsible, even for you,” Nathan said, frowning.

Before winning the position of Gamma, Nathan had worked as a pack enforcer for years. Horatio always saw him as more level-headed than the other enforcers, which said a lot since most shifters thought with their claws and teeth. In a way, Nathan reminded Horatio painfully of himself. Before Corey came back into his life, he’d been so opposed to Hayden making an outsider tabby shifter, who had come with his own set of problems, his mate.

“But we appreciate you telling us your side of the story,” Hayden said carefully.

Two other pack enforcers stood in the corners of the room, and Horatio knew no matter how much he trusted everyone here, word would easily get out to the rest of the pack soon. Would the other members start questioning his leadership skills?

“If there’s anyone who disagrees, I’m happy to defend my position in a challenge circle.”

Nathan blew out a breath. “Even so, with the werebear involved, the pack wouldn’t be able to back you up in this.”

Horatio nodded, expecting the outcome. He didn’t want to drag others into his mess either way. Besides, he understood the logic. The pack involving themselves for his sake would mean war with another animal group, but if was just Horatio, he could write it off as a personal problem.

“If there’s nothing else to discuss, I’m closing up and heading home,” Horatio said.

Besides, he wanted to see Corey. He’d been thinking about his human all day ever since he saw Corey in the break room, looking troubled. They could talk things out over TV and maybe some cuddles, or even sex.

“We’ll discuss other pack matters in the next meeting,” Hayden agreed. Nathan rose from his seat, excusing himself, and so did the other enforcers. Finally alone, Hayden let out a frustrated breath. “Horatio, you’re taking a fucking big risk here.”

“I know. Didn’t you do the same with Conner?”

Hayden glanced at the open door where Nathan and the two enforcers left. “Jaime has your back?”

Horatio nodded. He didn’t like it one bit that Jaime had volunteered to help with whatever he could, but he wouldn’t let his pride get in the way of his future. Horatio couldn’t do this by himself, especially if he intended to head out to werebear territory to make his claim on Corey.
